The German biotechnology sector is growing. Companies are delivering new products and efficient processes, all of which are increasingly in demand following a politically implemented energetic turnaround, as well as in the light of cost pressures in the health system. This is supported by a higher turnover of 2.4 billion euros (+9%), record financing of 700 million euros (+122%), and a growing number of employees in the commercial biotechnology sector to around 32,500 (+3%). The total number of dedicated biotechnology companies is also rising (538). In 2010, expenditure on research and development stayed at around one billion euros (-3%).
To complete the portrait of biotechnology in Germany, it is also crucial to give proper consideration to the four big research organisations Max-Planck-Society, Leibniz Association, Helmholtz Association, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft as well as the universities, in which a wide range of researchers are working in biotechnology research. In Germany, Scientists are busy pursuing biotechnological questions and issues across 202 facilities. This includes 63 universities, 26 technical colleges, 104 nonacademic research institutes, and nine sites for state departmental research. Altogether, around 27,000 people have jobs in the field of biotechnology.
