Dear Readers,

As 2010 draws to a close, we look back at a successful year. One highlight was the Year of Science 2010, during which numerous events, projects, competitions and workshops based on the "Future of Energy" took place throughout Germany and informed young people about sustainable advances in energy research.

In this newsletter, we return to the key issues which will continue to influence Germany's reputation as a place of research in years to come. These issues are crucial to solving the global challenges of the future, such as developing innovative technologies to meet the world’s increasing energy demands, finding sustainable ways to deal responsibly with CO2 emissions, and developing medication and vaccines for rare diseases and epidemics.

Looking ahead to 2011, we intend to strengthen and expand on existing relations andnetworks with our partner countries through international scientific programmes, such as the "Year of Germany and India 2011-2012" and the German-Russian Year of Science. We sincerely hope that this joint collaboration with scientists around the world will advance research efforts in the vital issues of the future.

Prof. Dr. Annette Schavan, MdB
Federal Minister of Education and Research
